Choices

It’s 3PM. I open my phone to order food. It takes me a moment to decide which food delivery app I want to open. Once there, I scroll through the hundreds of options unable to decide what I want. Minutes tick by and I just can’t pick. Frustrated I decide to go hungry. Too many choices, huh?

I’m over at a friend’s place. My friend tells me to pick what we should watch. I instinctively open Netflix and browse through hundreds of titles only to switch to Disney and Prime. I just can’t decide what show I want to spend my time on. Choices are good?

It’s finally winter break. I open the travel app to browse through flight options. Bali looks nice but so does Japan. The Philippines in December is stunning but so are the beaches in Greece. Maybe I should finally make that trip to New Zealand to meet my friend. I can’t decide which place I want to tick off my bucket list. Choice, choice, choice.

It’s the weekend. I’m single. I reinstall Hinge for the hundredth time. I browse through hundreds of profiles. Tall, short, entrepreneur, engineer, fair, dark, wants kids, childfree, smoker, divorced, mumma’s boy, married, looking for something serious, looking for something casual. I give up and delete the app again. But choices are helpful?

We’ve only spoken before. I walk into the room and towards you. I nervously say hi. You look up towards me with that classic scowl on your face and your eyes soften on meeting mine and you say hi back warmly. 10 seconds and my choice is made. You.

The paradox of having choices, and too many choices. We have so much freedom to choose that we become paralyzed by choice.

I kind of like having limited choices myself.

For Netflix I’m choosing to watch stuff that’s been dubbed in Ukrainian with English subtitles, so that eliminates a bunch of stuff. (I’m working on immersing myself more in the language I’m studying.) I added a bunch of stuff to my list, and now when I’m finished with one series, I see what’s next in the queue. It’s eliminated a lot of wasted time trying to figure out what’s next to watch!

Trust your instincts. It’s funny how some decisions come to us so easily while others we wrestle with for a long time.
